Small to Medium Sized Enterprises

This event is aimed at demystifying the 'Lean Thinking' (Lean) business philosophy that is now being used by corporations, companies and other institutions across the world to improve their business processes, optimise customer satisfaction and to increase profits. Toyota devised Lean and have used it to help make them the largest and most successful car company in the world, in terms of sales, productivity and turnover. Tesco have used Lean to become the number one supermarket retailer in the UK.

The event will be led by Paul Hilder. Paul holds an MBA in Lean Supply Chain Management (Cardiff Business School) is an experienced Lean consultant, a published author in both Information Technology and Law and is currently researching a book on Lean for SMEs.

This event will illustrate how even the smallest of SMEs can use Lean to improve customer satisfaction, remove waste, and improve business, service or production procedures. In effect, improve the effectiveness and profitability of any organisation. Lean is applicable to every and any type of business, from a small service orientated supplier to a global manufacturer.

The aim of this event is to explain the basic philosophies that underpin Lean and to then relate them to the SME environment, using a range of different tools that will include lectures, discussions, simulations and games. By the end of the day a delegate should have a clear understanding of what Lean is, how it could benefit their particular environment and an idea of how it could be implemented.

Who should attend? Ideally, those who are involved in the management of the organisation. In a small firm this could be the owner, or a senior manager, whilst in a larger firm a Director or equivalent senior personnel. If Lean is to be introduced into an organisation then it needs to become part of the strategic plan for the organisation, so it is obviously beneficial for senior managers to attend. In real terms, it is applicable right across an organisation and less senior personnel will also benefit from attending the event. Equally, less senior managers or personnel may well be more able to readily identify areas or processes that could benefit from the introduction of Lean or its more widespread use.

The event will challenge you to think about the processes and people within your organisation, the relationships between you, your suppliers and most of all your customers!
