The greatest failing of the vast majority of software packages is that access to them is generally limited to those that are considered to have a crucial need for the application. This is because the aim of the software suppliers is to maximise their revenue and the customer generally seeks to minimise expenditure. The knock on effect of this is that the actual business process becomes extremely difficult and fragmented.
If a member of the admin staff has a query regarding an invoice, the hire, off hire or location of a particular piece of plant, they would generally have to raise that question with a member of staff and with most operational staff working off site, this can be a difficult process. A whole industry of invoice reconciliation can be created and some firms employ staff just to perform these functions.
The philosophy behind OpenPlant is completely different. Simply put, it is one of vision. Any member of staff should be able to interrogate it, with an appropriate level of access for their position within the organisation. This means that invoice reconciliation becomes extremely straightforward and can be conducted easily, even from remote sites or offices, by administrative staff who generally would not require input from operational staff. Because OpenPlant requires no installation on client machines, it is also possible to have staff working from home, performing this or any other task, provided that they have an Internet enabled pc.
Administrative staff can also be given the power to edit and maintain the various databases within the application, for example, suppliers, plant items, categories and users.
